# Why Is It So Important Not to Flush the Toilet After Every Trip to Urinate?
Many people automatically flush the toilet every time they urinate. But from an environmental and household-cost perspective, that habit can use far more water than most people realize.
The idea sometimes summarized as **“if it’s yellow, let it mellow”** is mainly about water conservation—not about a hidden health benefit. In some households, occasionally delaying a flush after urination can save significant amounts of clean drinking water.
That said, it is not the right choice in every situation.
## 1. Every Flush Uses Clean Water
Modern toilets are much more efficient than older models, but every flush still uses water.
Depending on the toilet, one flush may use several liters. Older toilets can use considerably more.
If one person urinates five or six times per day and flushes every time, that can add up to thousands of liters of water over a year.
In a household with several people, the total becomes much larger.
Reducing unnecessary flushing can therefore lower household water consumption without changing how much water you drink, cook with, or use for bathing.
