Canned Tuna Oil: What You Should Know
If you are one of those people who, after opening a can of tuna, immediately pours the oil down the kitchen sink, it may be worth changing that habit.
Research conducted in Italy has examined the olive oil used in canned tuna and found that, after contact with the fish, the oil can contain nutrients such as DHA and vitamin D that originate from the tuna.
That does not mean every can of tuna oil contains the same amount of these nutrients. The nutritional composition can vary depending on the type of tuna, the oil used, processing methods, and storage conditions.
Canned Tuna Oil Shouldn’t Automatically Be Thrown Away
Researchers at the Experimental Station for the Food Canning Industry (SSICA) in Parma, on behalf of ANCIT (National Association of Fish and Tuna Canners), conducted a study examining the olive oil contained in traditional 80-gram cans of tuna from several brands.
For a more detailed analysis, the cans were stored at three different temperatures—4°C, 20°C, and 37°C—to observe possible changes over a period of 13 months. During this period, researchers conducted tests to evaluate oxidation and fatty-acid profiles, along with sensory and organoleptic characteristics such as color, flavor, and aroma.
The study reported that the olive oil remained relatively stable from both an organoleptic and nutritional perspective under the conditions examined. Researchers also found DHA and vitamin D in the oil after it had been in contact with the tuna.
What Is DHA?
DHA, or docosahexaenoic acid, is a long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid. It is an important structural component of the brain and retina and plays an important role in normal neurological and visual function.
DHA is particularly important during pregnancy and early development. For pregnant and breastfeeding women, nutritional requirements should be discussed with a healthcare professional, who can provide advice based on individual dietary needs.
What Is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus and contributes to maintaining normal bones, teeth, and muscle function. Unlike some water-soluble vitamins, vitamin D can be stored in body tissues.
The body can produce vitamin D when skin is exposed to sunlight, while dietary sources include certain fish, fortified foods, and supplements.
The amount of vitamin D obtained from canned tuna oil will vary, so the oil should not be considered a reliable substitute for established dietary sources or medically recommended supplements.
